Kushime - Yunomi/Tea Cup (Caramel Porcelain)

Regular price ¥660 JPY

Description

Fine combed lines running around the body — amber glaze pooling in the grooves, lighter on the ridges.

This yunomi is made by Oda Pottery (小田陶器) in Mizunami, Gifu — a workshop with around 100 years of history in the Mino-yaki tradition. The kushime technique involves drawing a comb-like tool across the clay surface before firing, creating closely spaced parallel grooves that catch glaze and light differently depending on where they fall. In the caramel colorway, the amber glaze deepens in the recesses and pulls back to a lighter warm tone on the ridges — a subtle but continuous variation across the surface. Toki is one of the core production towns within Mino-yaki, and Oda Pottery's focus on supporting Japanese food culture is evident in the straightforward, useful forms they produce. Story

Oda Pottery has been producing ceramics in Mizunami, Gifu Prefecture for close to a century, working within the Mino-yaki tradition that has made this region one of Japan's foremost centers of everyday tableware. The studio's guiding principle — to remain a supporter of Japanese food culture — shapes every decision from clay selection to glaze formulation.

Oda Pottery's pieces are made to be used: fired to withstand the demands of daily table life, glazed in tones that settle comfortably alongside food, and proportioned with the kind of quiet confidence that comes from long practice. Their work does not announce itself; it simply fits.
