Yunomi / Kumi-dashi Teacup (White) — Set of 2

Description

Rounded, thick-walled, and warm in the hands before the tea even goes in.

This yunomi is made by Hakudake Kiln in Hasami, Nagasaki. Called a "kumi-dashi" — a wide-mouthed cup designed for sencha, where the opening lets the aroma reach you as you lift it — the form is soft and slightly plump, with a rim that curves gently outward — it makes the first sip easier, less abrupt. Hasami porcelain has a clean, white body that glows faintly under warm light. The thickness keeps the tea from cooling too quickly, and the rounded profile fits comfortably in the palm. Simple, but hard to put down. Learn more about Hasami ware at Tea Ware: Hasami Ware.

Designed to be used with AZMAYA's copper tea saucer — the pair is worth having together.

Story

AZMAYA is a Tokyo-based design brand that partners with specialist craft studios across Japan, bringing each maker's expertise to bear on objects designed for daily use. This yunomi is produced by Shiratake-gama, a kiln in Hasami, Nagasaki Prefecture — a town with four centuries of porcelain production known for its clean forms and understated glazes.

Shiratake-gama works in the Hasami-yaki tradition, using local stone-based clay fired to produce a lightweight, refined porcelain. The resulting surface is smooth and consistent, with a quiet presence that suits a cup meant to be held every day.
